Established company, but new to Gas Safe

We run an established plumbing company, but specialise in bathroom refurbishments and general plumbing.

We are looking to grow and expand in other areas, and we have an opportunity to work with a gas safe registered plumber.

The GS plumber wants to stay self employed (subbie) and he has his own GS reg, but wants regular work. We have the opportunity through our current business to generate a decent amount of gas work, therefore, providing him work, and also grow our business. We previously have just passed on gas work to others.

I'm trying to gain clarity on how this all works to comply with the GS register.

Neither myself or any other plumber within our company is currently GS reg or old the qualifications to do so.

Are we able to register the company as GS, and link the new GS subbie within our registration?

Or does it have to done in another way?

Would the GS subbie still work under his own registration, or would it then be under a new company registration?

I know there are plenty of companies that work in this way, so any information would be appreciated

I would guess you need to use the GS engineers own reg number with his or hers permission.

However if they left you would be back to where you are now .

Thanks for the comment. I still think my company would need registration, otherwise I wouldn't be able to advertise / promote GS work in my company name? I don't think?

My thoughts are, my company needs registration but I would have to have a qualified/certified GS engineer connected / linked ( obviously ). Which would mean, if he moved on, then we no longer be able to undertake, unless another GS was under the registration.

This sort of info is hard to come by on the GS website

Tbh your best and most certain answer would be to phone gas safe and ask them (but think it would be ok you only have to look how many builders have gas safe on the side and they sub it out, well only the good ones ;D )

There was a thread last year where the only gsr guy left a company then noticed the company continued to use his gsr number causing him concern so I guess the subbie works under his number and you don`t / can`t register a company number unless you are gsr.

The small company I work for are GSR registered, however I am the only GSR, so, as long as I am there they are registered, if/when I retire they will have had to take another engineer on or the reg lapses. The company have been registered since the inception of corgi, so I don't know wether or not they could register this way again. Interesting. Might ask for a raise now!

Phone Gas Safe but I suspect that someone holding the required ACS elements for the work the company is carrying out would need to be directly employed before the company could apply for registration in there own right.

You can't hold a gas safe registration unless you have a proper qualified "employee" a subbing doesn't count.

With a subby you can carry out gas works but can't use the gas safe logo in any advertising or marketing.
However if Mrs Smith asks if you can fit her a cooker you can say yes and send out the subby to complete the works

you should get your self, or someone you employ onto an ACS course. I too have an established bathroom fitting/ general plumbing company. I have taken the hit and spent the time and money on the training and ACS quals and am now on the GSR. Our profile and workload has already shot through the roof!

Just be on good terms with each other is the best approach simple solution.
