smell
The sense of smell, or olfaction, is the special sense through which smells (or odors) are perceived. The sense of smell has many functions, including detecting hazards, and pheromones, and plays a role in taste.
It occurs when an odor binds to a receptor within the nasal cavity, transmitting a signal through the olfactory system. Glomeruli aggregate signals from these receptors and transmit them to the olfactory bulb, where the sensory input will start to interact with parts of the brain responsible for smell identification, memory, and emotion. There are many different causes for alteration, lack, or disturbance to a normal sense of smell, and can include damage to the nose or smell receptors, or central problems affecting the brain. Some causes include upper respiratory infections, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative disease.
I have Worcester Bosch Green star. LPG Combi. Kept in walk in store room on back wall. Ever since it replaced an old boiler of 13 years if it's windy and blowing in certain direction the cupboard smells of cabbage bad eggs. With this very bad wind the cupboard smells nearly all the time. On...
Hi,
I live on the first floor of a 6 storey block of flats.
For months now, there has been a bad smell coming from the stack pipe - the smell fills the whole flat, but it does appear to be coming from the stack pipe as the smell seems stronger around there and seems (we think) to get stronger...
Hi, I have recently bought a house where there is a constant drains smell in the downstairs wet room. I suspect that the trap is not sealing but I can't find how to seal this particular trap. I wonder if there is something missing that would seal it. The trap and drains are clear. Any help would...
Hi
Due to waiting a week for British Gas to come to repair a leak on the radiator - only for them to arrive and say they haven't got the part and so I will have to wait till Monday, I purchased a Status 7-Fin Oil Filled Radiator so I didn't freeze to death.
I plugged it in last night and it...
I've had a Franke 1.5 sink fitted recently using their siphon 2 plumbing kit as part of a new kitchen installation. However, I now regularly get sewage smells coming into my kitchen.
I was wondering whether the air vent has been installed in the correct position. Should it be installed in the...
We have a sulphur smell coming from the kitchen and bathroom when running the water.
We have been told it is likely gunge in the boiler which is an ancient Potterton Kingfisher 2. Is this likely and can it be cleaned out or cured or is it a new boiler job.
We had our radiators flushed...
Hi All! Was getting a sewer smell in downstairs bath (2 story house from 1975). Opened the wall to see that the vent was open to the air. Added AAV.
2 issues: 1. Now when toilet flushes, there’s a whining sound but not when sink drains. 2. Still getting a little sewer smell downstream of that...
We think that this is connected with the upstairs loo, the boxed in waste pipe comes through the spare room and then out the house.
There is also a downstairs loo at the same end of the house
There's a poo smell, but really only happens in the early hours. It's not connected with anyone...
Not long bought a house with a second story loft conversion to dorma which contains an en-suite. Toilet in en-suite has a flex waste pipe from spigot directly to top of the vertical soil pipe with not much clearance. Soil stack has no ventilation on 2nd floor causing drain smell in the en-suite...

Hello,
We have had a bad sewage smell coming from the downstairs toilet for the last few years. We had a new suite put in back in 2019 which didn't resolve the issue. The smell seems to be coming from the sink side of the room. I have removed the sink unit now and can see that the waste pipe...
Hi all, I have a sewer type smell in my 3rd floor bathroom which transfers to my kitchen when having a shower. I've checked the connection to soil pipe and it's dry. The smell seems to bypass the second floor bathroom. Is there anything I can do or is it a case of pulling up bathroom tiles?
We have a really awful smell coming from a single hot tap in our house. All the other taps hot and cold are fine. It's just this one tap that has the really bad rotten egg sulphur smell.
It empties into a hopper rather than the drain so I really don't think it's the drains. Research suggests...
Hi all, would appreciate some help here. This is from an old house in the Netherlands. I often, not always, get sewer smells in the shower room upstairs. In the pic, the two pipes on the right are for a sink and a washer. The one in the middle of the pic is for the shower. As you can see, they...
Hi all, my wife is going crazy over the smell from the kitchen sink...typical drain smell!.

I live in pattaya, thailand. just moved into a condo. a few days after moving in, I started smelling sewer gas coming from underneath my kitchen sink. I asked the landlord to fix it. but he has ignored me for a week now. so, I'm thinking I need to resolve this myself or move out. mind you...
Hi, we just moved to a new build. There is a dreadful 'sewer' smell in the house. No outside soil stack. AAV is sited behind bath panel in family bathroom upstairs. Had this replaced as plumber thought may be faulty, no change in smell. We are one of three houses and there is a joint pump...
I have a recurring bad smell whenever I use the bath or shower. It's not all the time it takes time to build up and then when you get home from work you can smell it when you open the front door. It doesn't smell like farts, it smells like some sort of chemical and spreads through the flat.
I had a Sololift2 D-2 installed to move wastewater from a sink and shower. It was installed under a cabinet and whenever it is used there is a smell which comes from the pump. I notice it has a venting valve which just vents into the cabinet. I am considering hooking the venting valve to a pipe...
