Before Present (BP) years, or "years before present" is a time scale used mainly in archaeology, geology and other scientific disciplines to specify when events occurred before the origin of practical radiocarbon dating in the 1950s. Because the "present" time changes, standard practice is to use 1 January 1950 as the commencement date (epoch) of the age scale. The abbreviation "BP" has been interpreted retrospectively as "Before Physics", which refers to the time before nuclear weapons testing artificially altered the proportion of the carbon isotopes in the atmosphere, making carbon dating after that time likely to be unreliable. In a convention that is not always observed, many sources restrict the use of BP dates to those produced with radiocarbon dating; the alternative notation RCYBP is explicitly Radio Carbon Years Before Present.
Hi Everyone,
I'm moving to a megaflow from a regular immersion heater set up. The house has several showers and at the moment they are fed by gravity feeds from the immersion (hot water) and a top floor tank (cold water). All the showers are powered by (pressure drop) pumps which are fed by...
Hi
I have a leaking joint on my mains supply. The joint is where a metal service pipe is joined to blue mpde. I have never seen a joint like this before. It says it is a 25mm or 3/4”. The joint has a tapered ridged insert but when I put 25mm mpde onto it, it is very loose. Not sure if something...
Hi. I'm renovating a house and have replaced most piping.
The upstairs rads are fitted, but the downstairs is not as it's yet to be plastered. The pipes are just chased into the walls with Speedfit stop ends attached.
Can I go ahead and get the boiler replaced and the system working now and...
Hi everyone, I hope someone can help as I'm very worried and help is taking a while.
Around 5am this morning our fire alarm went off, we now think it might also be connected to the carbon monoxide alarm. Got up, checking everything, no smell, no fire etc, assumed maybe the battery is running...
The (rather sparse) manual with the controller that was supplied with my UFH (Hettaj describes the start sequence as - when demanded by the stat - valves open then pump runs.
As the programmability of the stat is very basic, I’d like to replace it with a smart controller the same as I use on...
Looking to install a kitchen island with integral sink, this will mean installing drainage and plumbing. But will need to dig a hole through UFH, has anybody done this before?
Hello all. I hope you guys are well.
I have tiled a bathroom (don't normally) and after grouting and reading the instructions on the bag it states that shower areas should not be used for 2 weeks. Now, I have never done this with any bathroom a tiler has tiled for me. Is 5his what you guys do?
Hi
The onslaught of plumbing questions continues! Sorry folks... The plumber is coming on Monday and will be draining down to do the bathroom etc. I was considering whacking in some system cleaner before he comes, but would need to get some tomorrow.
1. Is it worth using for such a short...
I have a leak from this stopcock. It looks and measures very close to a 35x25 stopcock. I have tried all of our local suppliers plus some suppliers of old material but everyone comes to the same conclusion. One old tradesman helped by wrapping tape inside and it helped for a year or so, but it...
Hi all,
Homeowner here and would be really grateful of any feedback. I've had a new combi boiler installed into a 25y/o house yesterday.
Now the boilers intermittently v loud and intermittently not giving hot for a little while. Signs it seems (tho not a professional) of the system being dirty...
Hello all, I have been training (working through course books mainly) for several months now and there's a hell of a lot to take in. I'm really enjoying learning about plumbing and thought a good way to get started in the community here would be to ask a good question, so
What's the best...
Evening All
We are having a new heat exchanger fitted to a Veissmann boiler, the boiler is only six months old, the installers carried out a power flush but only after the boiler had been running for about a fortnight, then after six months it failed to heat radiators to temperature. Viessmann...
Hi all,
Hot water only lasts 2 - 3 minutes, if I turn it off for a minute hot water returns for a couple more minutes. It seems to last longer on a lower pressure. We had a plumber change the heat exchanger which didn’t make a difference. And it’s not the thermal mixer in the shower as we had...
While changing the posi-temp cartridge in one of our Moen shower faucets, I noticed a tee between the control and the tub spout. Can't see where it goes but I'm curious. Can anyone suggest why this exists? Thanks in advance.
Mike
Hi. First time poster here. My UFH doesn't heat up like it used to. I've isolated the issue (I think). It seems that whenever there is a call for UFH heat, the boiler fires up (like it used to), the actuator hums and opens up, the pump on the UFH manifold starts to run and the various valves on...
I'm sure this is a simple common question. I had two taps/Valves in my Airing cupboard which enabled me to turn off either Hot or Cold or both supplies in order to work on simple things like changing a washer. On his last visit my Plumber said you don't need these and removed them. Now I don't...
Hello all, we just moved into a house with a oil Rayburn range as the primary source of heating, but it has been off for about 10 years. We havent had any luck finding an engineer or knowledgeable person due to our extremely remote location and covid 19.
the problem seems to be that as oil...
