What kind of boiler would be best to replace IDEAL classic RS40 (1995) piezo ignition type. It's fine at moment but being old alone and ill a lot I like to be aware of what I need if it should fail. I wish they still did this one as lived here 14 years, only had one fault, blocked pilot jet 8 years ago, local engineer came within 2 hours, stripped and cleaned everything, said never let anyone change it, he went to work for Ideal so could not do other work any more. I only use 5000 kWh a year for heating and cooker, cost under £210 a year, I use electric shower and inverter air pump air con in my bedroom. I don't fancy condenser type but understand I have no choice. I like to be prepared. 10 year guarantee prefered.

I don't use the hot water cylinder as can't use bath due to disability, washer cold fill, just boil kettle for getting washed and washing up. I prefer one with best reliability and least bits to go wrong, don't need high flow rate for hot water if combi as don't use much and it'll run faster than me. Is it a major job to change to combi pipe wise,I understand cold tank, expansion tank and cylinder would all go with combi. am I correct.

In your circs the last thing you need is a combi.

keep the current boiler going, as long as its serviced regularly it should last years to come.
I would possibly look at a single point water heater for you hot water needs.
Isolate the the cold water service pipe to the water storage cistern in the loft and drain the cylinder down if not in use.

Thank you all you engineers for your confirmation of what the engineer in 2011 said, the last engineer that came to replace a radiator was expensive guy and took 3 weeks to get me a new simple rad in mid winter, he told me I should change it for a Worcester Bosch combi, seems he was looking for work. I have 2 relatives who have had big bills with WB boilers so worries me. I will take your advice and look after this old girl, would be nice for her to outlive me. I will look at the Intergas also. Merry Christmas to you all.
